The Pontiac Solstice continues as two trims for 2008, with the base convertible sporting a five-speed manual transmission and a 2.4L DOHC aluminum four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower. Four-wheel disc brakes, 18-inch aluminum wheels, traction control, a CD player with an auxiliary input jack, and XM satellite radio are all standard.
The performance-oriented GXP trades the 2.4L Ecotec engine for a turbocharged 2.0L I4, boosting horsepower by nearly 50% to 260. Along with the fiercer engine, the GXP receives a sportier four-wheel independent suspension, a limited-slip rear differential, dual exhaust outlets, fog lamps, and ABS. Convenience features such as cruise control, power mirrors and windows, remote keyless entry, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls are included as well.
The usual array of options, including a five-speed automatic transmission, leather seats, air conditioning, a six-disc CD changer, and larger speakers help soften the Solstice's purposeful roadster experience. Metallic pedals and a rear spoiler are available on both trims, while the Club Sport Package adds ABS brakes, a limited-slip rear differential, and a stiffer suspension to the base model.
Pontiac enhanced the 2008 Solstice with a number of new standard features, including a tire pressure monitor, OnStar, XM satellite radio, and a driver information center. StabiliTrak is now included on the base Solstice, the premium acoustic headliner is installed on all models instead of being optional, and the standard CD player is MP3 compatible.
On the GXP, the new Club Sport Package adds an independent sport-tuned suspension, a limited-slip rear differential, and anti-lock brakes.
The optional Smoker's Package is no longer available, and Brazen Orange joins the color palette.
The 2008 Pontiac Solstice is a terrific blend of affordability and exceptional styling, while the GXP adds performance to the mix. More standard features, such as traction control and XM satellite radio, make the Solstice an even better value than last year.
